Sikkim flash flood: Toll rises to 18; search on for 98 missing people

The toll in the flash flood in Sikkim mounted to 18 on Thursday as Army and NDRF teams worked their way through slushy earth and sheets of water in the Teesta river basin and downstream north Bengal for the second day in search of those who were swept away and are still missing, officials said.Eighteen bodies have been found so far while 98 people, including 22 Army personnel, remained missing after a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim in the early hours of Wednesday.

‘Creamy layer’ income cap unlikely to be upped soon

The Indian government is hesitant to increase the income ceiling for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) creamy layer due to concerns of resentment. Currently, an OBC family earning over Rs 8 lakh is considered "creamy layer" and ineligible for job and education quotas. The government believes that Rs 8 lakh is already a high enough bar and fears that raising it further may lead to copycat demands from other sections.

Cops raid 100 locations linked to NewsClick, arrest founder

The editor-in-chief and human resources head of web portal NewsClick have been arrested by Delhi Police's Special Cell after raids at approximately 100 locations. The portal is being investigated for allegedly receiving illegal funding from China and disseminating Chinese propaganda. The police have seized electronic devices and documents during the raids.
