India recorded 4.75 lakh additional deaths in 2020: Report
Around 4.75 lakh additional “all-cause” deaths were registered in India in 2020 — the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, as compared to 2019, according to Civil Registration System (CRS) data. The total number of deaths, including Covid-19 fatalities, registered during 2020 rose to 81.2 lakh, up 6% from 76.4 lakh in 2019.

India slides 8 places to 150 in 2020 Press Freedom Index
India has fallen eight places from 142 to 150 in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index of 180 countries. The index, published on Tuesday by Reporters Without Borders, points to an overall two-fold increase in media polarisation creating divisions within countries, and between countries at the international level.

2 MP tribals lynched for alleged cow slaughter
A mob of 15-20 people lynched two tribal men on suspicion of cow slaughter and another man was gravely wounded in Simaria village of Madhya Pradesh’s Seoni district around 3am on Tuesday, triggering a political storm in the state as opposition parties alleged that Bajrang Dal and BJP members were involved in the crime.
