MoD nod for projects worth over 2 lakh crore

The defence ministry on Thursday gave the preliminary approval for capital acquisition proposals worth Rs 2.23 lakh crore, including the procurement of 97 more Tejas fighters and 156 Prachand light combat helicopters as well as an upgrade of 84 existing Sukhoi-30MKI jets, in a hugely significant boost for indigenous defence production. The Rajnath Singh-led defence acquisitions council also accorded the acceptance of necessity (AoN) for 400 new towed artillery gun systems for Rs 9,900 crore to replace old Indian field guns and two types of Pinaka `area denial munitions’ for the Army.

'US not averse to conducting underground nuclear tests'

The Biden administration has not completely ruled out the possibility of conducting underground nuclear tests if circumstances demand so. This has been made amply clear in the US Department of Energy (DoE) and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) report to the US Congress this month. The report, which delves into the details about various aspects of the current status of America’s nuclear weapons programme, says: “The US must be ready to perform underground nuclear explosive tests using a test article.”

Dispose off riot victims' bodies in 2 weeks, SC orders Manipur

Scotching attempts by certain civil society organisations to fuel tension in Manipur by preventing relatives from claiming bodies of persons killed during the ethnic conflict, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the state government to dispose of the bodies stored for months in mortuaries, if the relatives did not claim them in two weeks for last rites at nine earmarked sites. SC directed collectors and superintendents of police in districts where nine sites for burial/cremation have been earmarked to facilitate the last rites without any "let and hindrance by any group or person".

Ukraine spy chief's wife poisoned: Report

The wife of Ukrainian spy chief Lt Gen Kyrylo Budanov has been poisoned with heavy metals, according to an intelligence source. Marianna Budanova, who is now undergoing treatment, fell ill for a prolonged period of time. Several other intelligence officials, including staff members of the Main Directorate of Intelligence (DIU), have also been poisoned. The type of heavy metal used in the poisoning has not been disclosed, but it is not commonly used.

Depression non-disclosure no ground to reject claim: Panel

The NCDRC has ruled that non-disclosure of ailments like depression should not be a basis for denying insurance claims by LIC. The commission stated that LIC's medical literature did not classify depression as a serious ailment and there was no record indicating that depression could lead to heart failure. Anil Patel's family approached the Kheda district consumer forum, which mandated LIC to fulfil the insurance claims. LIC contested the forum's orders, but the Gujarat State Dispute Redressal Commission upheld the decision in 2019.

MP: Man survives tiger attack, spends night perched on tree

Revenue official mowed down by MP mining mafia

Prashann Singh, a Madhya Pradesh revenue official, was crushed to death under a tractor by sand mining mafia in Shahdol district late Saturday. He was a patwari in Beohari revenue division. An ex-serviceman, he was an honest and diligent official of the revenue department, said his seniors. The murder, which took place at Gopalpur village on the banks of River Son, 565km east of Bhopal, around 11pm Saturday, was the latest in a string of horrific attacks by the mining mafia on police personnel and other government employees.

Cash-for-query-row: CBI begins inquiry in Mahua Moitra case

CBI has initiated an inquiry into the cash-for-query allegations against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on a reference from anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal, sources said on Saturday. Officials informed that Lokpal had received a complaint from BJP MP Nishikant Dubey against Moitra alleging that she had taken bribes to raise questions in Parliament. He had also accused Moitra of compromising national security for monetary gains. There was no formal statement from either CBI or the Lokpal on the issue.

Fight deepfakes or face action, govt tells social media, Net cos

The government has warned top social media and internet companies that their platforms may be temporarily suspended and even be ordered blocked in case they are unable to tackle the menace of deepfakes. Besides, they have been advised to work out methods to issue “pop-ups” for users once they log into their accounts. The pop-ups, akin to the cautionary advice that users get when they log into their online financial investment accounts such as Zerodha, will carry the ‘no go list’ for subscribers, explicitly giving out details on what kind of content is not to be uploaded, or shared.

The makers previously unveiled three songs from the film - Hua Main and Satranga. Hua Main has been sung by Raghav Chaitanya, Pritam. The song has been composed by Jam8 and the lyrics written by Manoj Muntashir Shukla. Satranga has been sung by Arijit Singh. The song has been composed by Shreyas Puarnik and the lyrics written by Siddharth-Garima. The third song Papa Meri Jaan has been sung by Sonu Nigam while Harshavardhan Rameshwar has composed the song.

Directed by Arjun Reddy director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Animal stars Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Triptii Dimri in pivotal roles. LGBTQIA+ community members on Thursday requested an open court hearing on their petitions seeking review of the Supreme Court’s October 17 judgment rejecting marriage rights for same-sex couples, and tactically based their demand on CJI D Y Chandrachud’s minority opinion – “when there is discrimination, it must be remedied by the courts”. One 3-Judge bench can scrutinise another 3-Judge bench’s ruling: SC

The Supreme Court of India has dismissed objections from the Centre regarding the scrutiny of a previous verdict upholding the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The court cited a similar exercise it conducted in interpreting the land acquisition law as precedent.​A bench of Justices Arun Mishra, Adarsh Kumar Goel and Mohan M Shantanagoudar in 2018 expressed its disagreement with the 2014 ruling and held that it needed to be re-examined and referred the controversy to a five-judge bench for adjudication.

SC to govt: Deny MSP to those lighting farm fires

Sending a clear “stick must follow the carrot” message to farmers whose refusal to stop stubble-burning has been a major factor behind air pollution in the national capital region, the Supreme Court on Tuesday suggested that the Centre stop buying their crop so that they are denied the benefit of minimum support price (MSP). The bench, also emphasised that the Centre and Punjab government must try to promote alternative crops to replace rice cultivation which has depleted water levels in the state and leads to stubble burning.

The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday attached properties worth over Rs 750 crore, including the well-known Herald House near ITO, belonging to Associated Journals Ltd (AJL), the publisher of National Herald and other party mouthpieces of the Congress, in a money laundering case against party leaders Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul, and Young Indian, which now controls AJL. There is a constant overload of information on social media, and you don't know how much of it will impact you negatively. It slowly creeps up on you, and that negativity starts building up. Which is why I've started muting and unfollowing pages that make me feel anxious, sad or unhappy in any way — I have grown quite ruthless."

The 25-year-old actress continued, "Spending time alone helps me because I'm constantly surrounded by people, advice and opinions. There's a lot of background noise, so spending time by myself and listening to my own voice is what calms me down.”
