US Fed holds key lending rate steady, signals cuts in 2024

The US Federal Reserve voted to keep interest rates at a 22-year high for a third straight meeting. The Fed's decision allows policymakers to determine the extent of any additional policy firming. The inclusion of the word 'any' dampens expectations of another interest rate hike. The decision keeps rates high as the Fed fights inflation towards a long-term target of two percent. The Fed also published updated economic forecasts, upgrading its growth outlook for this year and reducing it for 2024.

Why Airtel, Reliance Jio & Vodafone support this US bill

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) is urging the Indian government to adopt a bill similar to the one proposed in the US Congress. The bill, called the Lowering Broadband Costs for Consumers Act of 2023, aims to make large internet apps contribute to infrastructure costs in order to lower broadband costs for consumers. It also proposes that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandate social media platforms, streaming services, and other edge service providers to contribute to a universal fund for building networks. The bill classifies various services including social media platforms, streaming services, video gaming services, and search engines under edge service providers. COAI believes that this bill supports their stance and wants only large traffic generators to contribute to infrastructure costs in India.

J&K verdict: Pak blusters but may find 'face saver' in statehood

The Supreme Court J&K verdict solidifies the revocation of the special status of J&K, allowing India to present it as a fait accompli to Pakistan. The judgement also highlights India's position that Pakistan has no role in the internal affairs of J&K. It inspires hope for an India-Pakistan detente once the newly elected governments are in power. Pakistan sees the order for early return to statehood as a potential face saver and a way to untangle the knots in the India-Pakistan relationship.

Trump has the edge over Biden if elections were held today: Report

If the 2024 US elections were held today, former President Trump would beat President Biden, according to a poll from the Wall Street Journal cited by the New York Post. The survey also showed that former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley had a significant lead over Biden, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had a draw with Biden. Voters tend to trust Trump more than Biden on significant issues like the economy, crime, inflation, border security, and the situation in Israel-Hamas. Abortion could be a decisive issue in the election. Trump maintains a strong position in the GOP presidential primary.
