Weekly Covid cases fall below 70,000, but no decline in deaths

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the then undivided state of J&K had 78.4 lakh registered voters. Excluding what is now the UT of Ladakh, the number would have been 76.7 lakh. The Supreme Court asked the Centre on Friday to consider dropping proceedings against undertrials who are involved in not very serious offences and have spent one third of the maximum sentence and free them as a one-time measure on the 75th year of Independence. More than 76% of prisoners are undertrials, it said, most of them poor and illiterate, reports Amit Anand Choudhary. Calling for "out of the box thinking", the bench said the move would help deal with crowding of jails and pendency in courts.

Over half of UAPA-accused in 18-30 age group: MHA data
Around 53% of the total 4,690 people arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) between 2018 and 2020 were aged between 18 and 30, while 13 were below 18 and 10 above 60 years, the home ministry informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The number of arrests made under the anti-terror law fell by a significant 32% to 1,321 from 1,948 in 2019, though the number of convictions rose to 80 from 34 (135%), MHA stated.

Govt cuts windfall tax on fuel export, raises levy on domestic crude oil
The government on Tuesday evening cut the windfall tax on diesel and ATF in line with softening international petroleum product prices but raised the duty on domestically produced crude oil.
