New variants of Omicron seen in 7 Maharashtra patients

Amidst rising Covid-19 cases in the state, health officials on Saturday said seven patients were found infected with newer Omicron sublineages of BA.4 (four patients) and BA.5 (three patients). These cases were found in Pune. Maharashtra is the third state to report these newer sublineages, which are responsible for the fifth wave in South Africa. A few days back, Insacog scientists announced that two cases of BA.4 were detected in Tamil Nadu and one BA.5 in Telangana.

Govt’s wheat buy estimate cut by 50%, lowest in 13 years

India recorded 4.75 lakh additional deaths in 2020: Report

Around 4.75 lakh additional “all-cause” deaths were registered in India in 2020 — the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, as compared to 2019, according to Civil Registration System (CRS) data. The total number of deaths, including Covid-19 fatalities, registered during 2020 rose to 81.2 lakh, up 6% from 76.4 lakh in 2019.
